Historically a place of banishment, exile and isolation, Robben Island, a World Heritage Site, is only 12 kilometers away from Cape Town's mainland. It was here that Nelson Mandela and other political prisoners were imprisoned for many years.
The Ferry boat leaves the Nelson Mandela Gateway at 09:00, 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00 daily and takes 45 minutes to reach the island.
Tours around the island are conducted by a specialist Guide, and ex-political prisoners manage the tour through the prison, including a visit to Nelson Mandela's cell.
